Valley Forge for [livejournal.com profile] dr_boyce

The first thing she noticed was the cold. It shouldn't have been this cold. Amara hated being cold and wet so even before she opened her eyes she knew wherever she was she was not going to be happy, so she laid there a second longer, hoping that whatever it was making her cold and wet would be a dream. It was the birds that made her open her eyes. Why were there birds? It made no sense....

Slowly, she opened her eyes, squinting in the light. She was lying on her back in the forest.... what forest? Where was she? She sat up to look around, and found herself in a forest covered in a blanket of snow. Well, that would explain the cold and wet. She spent a second cursing whoever decided miniskirts for uniforms was a good idea, and looked around for some sign of where she was or how she got there. Whatever and wherever it was, it couldn't be good.

Love it!

She moved forward a little to get a better look. "Are those.... muskets? Where are we?"

She frowned, straining to see what exactly was going on. "I was always bad at history... Please tell me this is just a very strange bad dream?"

"Not unless I'm in it with you," he answered.

"Time travel? Is this even possible?" She shook her head a little. Obviously it was since they were there. "Or maybe... aliens trying to impersonate people? But why would they try to do that?" The whole situation was simply insane, and thinking out loud wasn't making it seem any better.

He's absolutely truthful with her. "I have no idea," he said, at a loss. "Do we want to risk it? Or try and find shelter somewhere else?"

"I'm freezing, and I don't see any shelter nearby... I say we risk it." She tugged at the hem of her skirt again, wishing it were longer. Something told her that the amount of leg revealed by her uniform would be frowned upon. "I guess we should make up a story or something to explain who we are and why we're dressed... differently."

Before he had a chance to respond, the sound of a trig breaking to their rear alerted him. He turned, spying movement amidst the trees.

She turned too, hoping it was a small animal or something harmless like that. "Who's there?" She asked, trying to sound more confident than she felt.

A handful of soldiers revealed themselves, taking aim with their muskets. They themselves looked cold, their clothes well worn and used. "Halt in the name of the Continental Army!"

Phil glanced at Amara briefly before moving his hands away from his body.

She studied the men for a second before raising her hands in a "don't shoot" gesture. "How's your American history?" She muttered, trying to ignore the sinking feeling in her stomach.

"Good. But I have a feeling it's about to get a whole lot better," he muttered in response.

"Good. Because mine isn't." She turned her attention to the men with muskets. "Gentlemen... I'm afraid we're a little... lost." Lost. Now that was the understatement of the century.
