Amara enjoyed the night shift, but she had to admit it made it hard to get out of bed. She wondered why her sleep cycle was so effected. Space was always dark. It shouldn't matter what the clock said. However, when she tried to get up this particular day she felt as if she hadn't slept at all. Every muscle in her body ached, and she felt... well... odd. Something was off. Her stomach felt like it was squirming... and she felt ill.

She looked down and was surprised to see her stomach looked a little bloated. "What the-?" She got up quickly and went to check her appearance in the mirror. Yes, her stomach was definitely not as flat as it usually was. There was a certain roundness... as it she were... no, not possible. She wasn't even going to entertain the thought. First of all she never missed her birth control. Second, if she were pregnant a belly wouldn't have appeared overnight. It simply didn't work that way. It must be something else.

Whatever it was, it felt like something just moved in there. That scared her, and she carefully felt her abdomen, shocked to find there appeared to be something inside her. Moving. Responding to her touch.

Frightened and trying not to panic, she dressed quickly and rushed off to Sickbay, hoping Leonard was on duty. Whatever was going on was definitely going to require his attention.

She shook her head. "I feel completely fine. It's odd. I know I should be sore or tired but I'm not. If anything I feel better than I have in a long time."

She then held out a finger, lettin the baby grasp it. "I looks human. If there's no danger, can I take him with me?"

(Um... inconclusive? I don't know I'm so not a science person.... we can jump to later if you want...)

"I'm not into th' idea of you bein' alone with him yet. I don't know if he's safe, Amara. He grew from nothin' in the space of 24 hours. It's not natural," and therefore, something to be wary of. Very wary.

"I know he's not a danger to anyone. I'm sure of it." She sighed a little, frustrated she was unable to communicate how she felt effectively. "Look, I know this is weird and I shouldn't feel like this, but I just know he's not a threat, and I want time with my son. Not to stand by and watch him be poked and prodded like a science experiment. He may not be human but he's still a person, and he's still my son."

"He's a person but Amara... he's not our son," he looked at her then and let out a breath. "I need ta get Christine ta help me with a few tests. I'll be right back," he hesitated then and reached out to her arm. "Be careful."

(Keep it here? Think this could be a good chance for her to ask Christine, maybe lie and say Leonard gave her permission to take him home?)

She nodded slightly, frowning at his words and watching him go. As soon as he was she gathered up the boy and spoke to Christine, she knew lying was wrong. And part of her knew this was a really bad idea, but her instincts were overriding the logical part of her brain and right now her instincts were screaming at her to take the baby home with her and take care of him herself.

She hurried back to her quarters, managing to avoid being seen, and set about the task of being a good mother to her new baby boy.

Leonard just missed Christine in going through to Amara. When he eventually found her, he ended up apologising ten minutes later to her after originally exploding in anger at her for letting Amara go with the baby. A rant on how dangerous it was, and he apologised. Profusely.

Exiting to their quarters to track her down, he let out a breath and entered, calling out her name in what he tried to convey as a controlled tone.

A little dark-haired boy with big brown eyes ran out to greet him and smiled up at him. He was followed quickly by Amara, who put a hand on his shoulder, aware that she was about to face the wrath of McCoy. "Say hello, Karan..."

The boy grinned up at him and waved brightly. "Hello."

Leonard's eyes widened when he saw this... boy. Not a baby. A boy. And he took a tiny step back in surprise before dipping his head to look at the young boy.

"This... can't be right."

The boy stared up at him, as if confused by his staring. Amara knelt beside him to get his attention. "Sweetheart, why don't you go play for a while?"

The boy nodded and went off and Amara stood again, and lowered her voice to address him. "He just... grew. I can't explain it."

"You.. have been so irresponsible!" he kept his voice low but it was terribly obvious how unhappy he was. "If you'd not taken him away from medical, I might be able ta explain it."

She knew he wasn't going to be happy, but at least he wasn't yelling. "I know... I... I couldn't stop myself." She looked across the room at the boy then back to Leonard. "Do you think you'll be able to stop his aging?"

"Well, you shoulda done. This was stupid, idiotic an' lord knows how many people you could have put at risk like this," he snapped, still quiet. He wasn't going to easily forgive her for this, for going behind his back.

"I don't know."

"Karan isn't dangerous." She still didn't know how she knew this, but she was certain it was true. She paused to watch the boy, who was playing quietly on her bed. "If he keeps aging like this he won't be alive for very long. And he deserves some type of life besides being poked and prodded like a science experiment."

"An' if you keep him here, I might not get ta work out how ta stop his aging!" his voice rose louder then and, shooting a quick look towards the boy, he looked back at Amara. "His entire DNA make up is somethin' I've never seen before."

She bit her lip, torn between giving her son a happy life and doing whatever she could to keep him alive. Finally she nodded a little. "Karan, come here please love?" The boy ran over and hugged her leg and she stroked his hair fondly. "We're going to go with the Doctor, alright?"

He looked at the Doctor, then nodded slowly, taking Amara's hand. "Is it gonna hurt?" The boy asked him, with wide-eyed fear.

"It won't hurt," he let out a breath then and rubbed at his eyes as he walked them to medical. "I need ta do a full body scan. All you hafta do is lay down an' let me scan you. It'll give me enough ta work on."

"Then can I go play?" He asked, hopping from one foot to another beside Amara as he walked holding her hand. Amara bit her lip and decided to let Leonard answer. She knew if she took the boy without his expressed permission again it would not be good.

"You... may. But I want you ta wear somethin' on yer neck for me ta get constant readin's from you," he would compromise, for Amara's sake. At least with it constantly reading him, he would be able to keep a track on the boy.

"Thank you." Amara said softly, happy for the compromise. When they got to sickbay she resisted the urge to hover over his shoulder and found a quiet corner to watch and wait. She felt completely useless, and had honestly never felt so anxious before.

He led the little boy to a biobed and set up a scan, explaining to him as he did so that he just had to lay there for a minute. When all was done, he helped the boy off of the bed and put a small device on his neck, telling him to not fiddle with it and leave it on.

When it appeared he was done Amara came over to join them. "How'd he do?" She asked, forcing herself to smile so she wouldn't scare the boy.

"He... did well," he replied with a slight nod of his head. "He's free ta go fer now, Amara. I'm gonna keep track of his biological readings with the portable scanner on his neck."

"Thanks..." She glanced over at the boy then lowered her voice. "Look, I'm sorry about before... I don't know what came over me... I'm... really not acting like myself at all."

"No, yer not. Yer actin'... like a mother," he hesitated. "I know he feels like yer son, but you hafta remember that he isn't, Amara. He may have grown inside of you, but he ain't yer son anymore than... than I am." He knew that with this rapid aging, the boy would indeed die soon. Which meant he didn't want her to tie herself to him so tightly, like a mother did.

"I know... but I can't help it. Maybe he mixed up my brain or something, but I can't stop myself. And believe me, I'm not quick to love." She didn't understand how the boy had gotten her guard down so quickly, but the maternal instincts were strong and she couldn't fight them. It was all very unnerving, and it frightened her a little, but she couldn't resist.
