Surprise! for hesdead_jim

Amara enjoyed the night shift, but she had to admit it made it hard to get out of bed. She wondered why her sleep cycle was so effected. Space was always dark. It shouldn't matter what the clock said. However, when she tried to get up this particular day she felt as if she hadn't slept at all. Every muscle in her body ached, and she felt... well... odd. Something was off. Her stomach felt like it was squirming... and she felt ill.

She looked down and was surprised to see her stomach looked a little bloated. "What the-?" She got up quickly and went to check her appearance in the mirror. Yes, her stomach was definitely not as flat as it usually was. There was a certain roundness... as it she were... no, not possible. She wasn't even going to entertain the thought. First of all she never missed her birth control. Second, if she were pregnant a belly wouldn't have appeared overnight. It simply didn't work that way. It must be something else.

Whatever it was, it felt like something just moved in there. That scared her, and she carefully felt her abdomen, shocked to find there appeared to be something inside her. Moving. Responding to her touch.

Frightened and trying not to panic, she dressed quickly and rushed off to Sickbay, hoping Leonard was on duty. Whatever was going on was definitely going to require his attention.

"I'll be with you all night," he promised with a whisper. He would be too - perhaps not asleep, but he'd be there with her.

She was already fast asleep, the pills having worked their magic. However, they did nothing for her dreams, and only an hour later she was starting to toss and turn.

By that point he'd shifted his pillows to prop himself up a little and was reading with a PADD in hand. As she started to toss and turn, he gently touched her shoulder and her arm, trying to soothe her.

She jumped when he touched her arm and jerked away, almost rolling off the bed.

"Wha-?" It took her a second to remember where she was as she woke up. Try as she might she just couldn't shake the groggy feeling. It muts be the effect of the pills, she couldn't say she cared for it.

"Hey-- it's okay. I'm here," he replied quietly, trying to calm her the best he could do.

"Mmph." She sat up and rubbed her eyes again. "Sorry... bad dream." She was used to nightmares, but this one seemed more vivid than she was used to. Again, she decided it must be the medication.

"No, no it's okay," he watched her carefully as he settled down his PADD. "You've had a hectic 24 hours. Yer allowed a lil'... difficulty there."

She nodded a little and put an arm around him to snuggle closer. She had an overwhelming need to be close to him right now that she couldn't explain, but she didn't think he would mind.

However, she didn't want to talk about any of that right now. She wanted to put her mind on something else in the hope that it would keep her nightmares away. "Talk to me about something? Anything?"

He shifted his arms so he could wrap them both around her, holding her close to him. His hold wasn't tight, but it was enough. He didn't want her to feel crowded, but he needed her to feel that he wanted to be there for her.

"We can talk 'bout... shore leave comin' up?"

She smiled a little, glad he seemed to understand what she needed right now. "Sounds like a good topic... Do you have plans already?"

"Well... I was thinkin' we could go down ta Earth. Ship is stoppin' off there for maintenance an' whatnot. It'd mean we get Christmas there. An'... then I could have Jo, too," he had evidently given this a great deal of thought, and was just using now to talk to her about it in the hopes it would cheer her somewhat.

She smiled faintly. "That sounds nice... I haven't celebrated Christmas in a long time." She paused, thinking for a second. "What's your daughter like?"

"She's... my angel," he replied with a small smile. "She's gonna love you. But I want my two favourite girls with me over these holidays."

"I'm sure she's great... though I'll admit today is probably the most experience I've had with kids." The idea of meeting his daughter did make her a little nervous, and she couldn't help but wonder what would happen if the girl didn't like her.

"Yeah... well, we'll see. But I'm sure it'll go well," he replied with a small smile. "I hafta start lookin' at presents now. For you both."

"You don't have to get me anything. Just... spending the time with you is enough, as corny as that sounds." She never was used to getting gifts, so she never expected people to get her anything. "Where will we go?"

"I want to," he knew she wasn't used to getting presents, which added to his wanting to get her one. He wanted to treat her, and treat her like she should have always been.

"I've been thinkin' somewhere down South."

"As long as it's not Louisiana. Lots of not so great memories down on the bayou." She really had no desire to ever go back there again.

"Oh no.. I was thinkin' more Georgia, or Savannah," he replied with a shake of his head.

"I've never been to Savannah. It's not too cold, is it?" She hated snow and ice. Some chilly weather she could handle, but she was a warm weather person by nature.

"No, no it's amazin' there," he replied with a smile and shake of his head. "You'll enjoy yerself, I promise you."

"After today I think I could use that." She admitted. "And we haven't had much time just to... enjoy each other." Their duty shifts always seemed to conflict, and they never seemed to have as much time as she'd like.

"Mmmm, we do need some time together," he agreed with her wholeheartedly on that. They were both busy so much of the time as of late that time alone with each other was few and far between.

"Could we have a kitchen? I miss baking and cooking with fresh ingredients." She had visions of making a huge holiday dinner and baking cookies and all sorts of sweets.

"Of course. I'm sure you'll enjoy that an' if yer havin' fun, that's part of the holidays reasonin' sorted," so a real kitchen was a definite.
