Amara wasn't as nervous submitting this particular log. It did have her usual overly personal touch of course, but if Admiral Pike hadn't sent her packing yet he probably wasn't going to. At least not over these logs. She entered his office right on time and set the PADD down on his desk, waiting to be acknowledged before speaking. She actually hated turning in assignments in person, and her stomach turned a little as she waited for him to read it. There was something unnerving about having your work judged right in front of you, and she had to say although Admiral Pike had always been fair, it still scared the hell out of her.

Amara wasn't sure exactly what had possessed her to do this. She hadn't even mentioned Diwali since she was a little girl, and even then as a kid they'd barely celebrated. She remembered the fireworks, and the lights, and the excitement. She didn't quite remember the origins or how to celebrate Diwali properly. She supposed she was having something of a cultural identification crisis. She hadn't been back to Mumbai, or India even, since she was seven, and after that she lived in so many places it was hard to form any type identity. She'd never really given much thought to her culture, besides the fact that she loved the old Bollywood movies. However, since she decided to have a new attitude, and be a more positive person, she started to look more at her own background, searching for some good that she could have from her past, and the good included festivals.

She didn't want to be extremely obvious or overboard about it. Honestly, she didn't like attention, and she certainly didn't want to answer questions (she probably wouldn't know what to say anyway), so she planned to be covert about it all. Besides, the gifts were her way of saying thank you to everyone. She didn't want anything in return.

First she went to the mess hall early in the morning, in the hopes that it would be relatively empty. She was in luck. Just the odd crewman getting his morning coffee. She set out the plate of sweets she had made for all to enjoy. Next to it she put a sign: "Happy Diwali. Enjoy." She made no attempt to claim any of it, and hoped people would just eat the food without questioning where it came from.

Next were the personal gifts. Each one was wrapped with a card that only said "Happy Diwali", again, she hoped people didn't put too much thought into where these things were coming from.

First she stopped by Admiral Pike's office. Luckily, the Admiral wasn't there yet. She very carefully set the beautifully iced cake on his desk with the simple card beside it. She had enjoyed icing the cake, even though it had taken her most of the night, it was worth it. She hoped he enjoyed it.

Next, she went to Christine's quarters and set her present outside her door. Blue looked good on Christine, and she imagined she would like jewelry. She hoped she'd done a good job picking out the set.

Finally, she stopped by Frank's and left his gift. She hoped he would find it... informative. She smiled a little as she left. That one might benefit her in the end too.

She then went about her duties, just like always. However, today she felt rather good and was smiling a great deal more than usual. It had been fun, playing the Diwali Fairy... or Santa... or whatever. Amara had a nice warm and happy feeling that she was unaccustomed to, and it made her feel giddy. It felt good. She would have to do it again sometime.

Amara had debated whether or not she should turn this log in to Admiral Pike. Honestly she had not meant it to get so.... personal... but it had. She thought about deleting it and quickly writing another short log on the work she'd done in the cargo bay, but last time she'd done that he'd called her in for a conference. This time, he wanted this log in person. That made it even more nervewracking. Honestly, had she any brains she'd delete the damn thing and write something less... private, more official.

However, she was serious about wanting to make a change. And she felt that putting her anger out there was important to that process. So she had decided to keep the damn log. What was the worst that could happen? Pike decides she's crazy and finally boot her out of the Academy? Or decide the only thing he wanted her around was empty cargo containers? That pretty much seemed to be her current assignment anyway...

And so, with a final sigh, somewhere between defeat and resolution, the Cadet entered the Admiral's office and set the PADD with the dreaded Field Training Log on his desk. She then stood stiffly, waiting for the verdict.

Amara leaned back in her chair with a satisfied sigh. She had finally finished her history paper, and it felt great to be done. She had done a lot for this one. Read the research, found specific examples to prove her point, thesis, research, quotations, footnotes, works cited, it was all there. As she read through it again she couldn't help but feel a little proud. She actually sounded like she knew what she was talking about.

It helped she had picked a topic she actually knew a little bit about and was interested in. The Effect of Imperialism on Modern India. Granted she hadn't been to India since she was seven, but it was still home in a way. She got the idea when she couldn't sleep one night and decided to watch an old Bollywood movie and noticed how English words just slipped in seemingly effortlessly with the Hindi.  So... she focused on how Imperialism had such a huge impact on India's culture. It was quite possibly the longest and most detailed paper she ever wrote. She just hoped Admiral Pike liked it.

He had asked her to turn it in face to face. She cringed a little thinking about that because when you're asked to turn something in face to face it's never good. Normally it's so they can point out all the things you did wrong to your face. She wasn't really in the mood to have her work picked apart today, but Admiral Pike had given her until 1700 hours to turn it in so she may as well get it over with.

With a sigh she got up and went to his office. She really hoped he liked the paper... she wasn't in the mood to be criticized.
