It took maybe an hour out of his life, but it had changed hers forever. Captain Pike had been on a recruitment tour, speaking to thousands of young people at hundreds of high schools. The faces all blurred together, the names, even of the kids he recruited tended to be forgotten. This place was just like any other, except for one thing, a high school teacher who would not take no for an answer.

It hadn't been for herself however, she had asked him repeatedly, almost harrassingly, to take a student out for coffee and have a word with her. He'd looked at the girl's records. She wasn't the type Starfleet was interested in. Her test scores were average, in fact her math scores were below average, and her discipline infractions were numerous. Had she not been brought to his attention he probably would have taken no notice. But that damn teacher. She wouldn't let up.

Finally, he asked her why she was bothering, wondering why she cared so much about a kid who by all appearances was nothing but a pain in the ass. And the young woman replied with something that put the seasoned starship captain in his place.

"Just because no one else believes in this kid doesn't mean she doesn't deserve a chance. If you could change someone's entire life by taking an hour of your time, why wouldn't you do it?"

And so Captain Pike found himself in a coffee shop, sitting across from a sixteen-year-old foster kid named Amara. He was surprised to find himself impressed by the girl. She listened to every word he said, seeming to absorb it all like a spounge. She was bright, and despite the troubling past he knew she'd experienced, there was a light there. A desire to do better. To become more than she was.

Still, he had to be truthful. With her grades getting into the Academy would be extremely unlikely. So, as they finished their drinks he decided to be honest. "You know, Miss Smith, your past performance in school will make it... challenging to get accepted."

The girl nodded, getting up to leave and stopping to shake his hand. "Just because something's impossible doesn't mean you don't try, sir." She said.

Captain Pike smiled a little. That was the right answer.
